MP Sakshi Maharaj wants women to give one child to RSS

Taking a concrete step to check saffron motormouths, BJP chief Amit Shah on Monday directed serving of a showcause notice to controversial MP Sakshi Maharaj seeking an explanation for his recent comments like urging Hindu women to have four children despite having been warned to observe restraint. The Unnao MP has been in the news for the wrong reasons, having earlier described Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse as a “patriot“, forcing the party to distance itself from his comments. He had also commented controversially on the functioning of madrassas, following up the gaffe with the “four children“ remark that was seen to have communal overtones.
Shah, who had expressed disappointment over MPs not adhering to party discipline, is understood to have directed the issuance of the notice to Maharaj, giving him 10 days to explain why disciplinary action should not be initiated. The action comes soon after some quiet but forceful backroom talk between the BJP leadership and RSS brass led to the shelving of high-profile `ghar wapsi' programmes that had led to allegations that the Modi government was playing to a communal agenda rather than sticking to its development plank.
Modi made his thoughts on the issue clear at a meeting of party MPs where he said there should be no dilution of the government's focus on development. He has since followed it up by taking up the “Make in India“ programme at investors' meets like Vibrant Gujarat Summit. BJP chief Amit Shah has directed the party to issue a notice to controversial MP Sakshi Maharaj over his recent statements.
The over-the-top comments of MPs like Sakshi Maharaj and minister of state (MoS) Niranjan Jyoti’s abusive reference to Muslims has caused considerable embarrassment to BJP, with the opposition accusing the saffron party of attempting to polarize public discourse.
The incidents also led to opposition blocking Parliament, leading to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the Jyoti case.
The remarks were further exacerbated by the ghar wapsi programmes run by a senior RSS pracharak that led to another blockade in Parliament and the stalling of important government business. Interestingly, in his comments on Hindu women and children, Sakshi Maharaj urged one child to be given to the service of RSS.
An agency report quoted the MP to have said, “We have accepted the slogan ‘Hum do, hamara ek’. Now these traitors are not satisfied. They have given another slogan ‘Hum do aur hamara... They are advocating marriage of a girl to a girl, boy to another boy. This is what the last government did. This is why I...want to request women to give birth to at least four children. Give one to sadhus and ascetics.
Media says there are ceasefire violations happening, so send another to the border,” the saffron-clad MP said at a religious convention in Meerut last week.
BJP’s national secretary Shrikant Sharma said the party had asked its public representatives and workers not to make such comments in public. “The remarks made by Sakshi Maharaj are his personal views and the party has nothing to do with it,” he had said.
