Napping guards will now be up and running, say cops

Security agencies may soon take a leaf out of the night patrol police teams' book to keep their guards on their toes — and awake.
If caught napping when on duty, security guards are being made to run for 15-20 minutes in the area by night patrol policemen. This 'deterrent method', which sources dubbed as "punishment", keeps the guards awake and alert for the rest of their duty hours.
"The punishment has been so effective that the security guard who has been made to run once fears being caught again and hesitates to take a nap when on duty," reasoned a senior police official from the western suburbs.
And policemen don't just leave it at that. They sound out an alert to the housing society or the guards' employers.
The police decided to go with this unique method after a spate in burglaries in buildings across the city despite security guards being on duty. In most cases, it was found that the break-ins took place when the night guards dozed off.
Employing the method doesn't mean that the police teams have washed their hands of patrolling. They have intensified patrols in vulnerable areas, including lanes and by-lanes. "It is not possible for the police to keep a check on each and every building. So, if the security guard is alert, it makes our job much easier and it also makes the city safer," says another official.
