MGM girls qualify for state weightlifting meet

The young lifters will battle it out for supremacy in the championship to be held at Kolhapur from November 10 to 12

Three girls from MGM School, Nerul have been selected for the state-level weightlifting championship to be held from November 10 to 12 at Kurundwar, Kolhapur. Rucha Junarkar, Charanjeet Kaur and Zarine Shaikh are weightlifters from the school who made it to states in a sport that's predominantly practiced by men.
Rucha and Charanjeet, both standard IX students, have been learning the sport since past two years while X standard student Zarine is practicing the sport since quite some time now. The trio performed extremely well and bagged the first position at the recently held DSO divisional-level championship. This meet was hosted at the Dnyandeep High School Karave, and the girls competed against some of the most promising players in their category. The girls are the only students from Navi Mumbai to attend the championship at the state-level this time.
All the three girls competed in the under-17 age group and they have to undergo two levels to score a performance. They lifted a total of 70 kg in the two rounds (with 30 kg in the first and 40 kg in the second round) to qualify for the higher level. Savita Gulati, principal of MGM School has been motivating these girls to excel in their respective sport.
"Weightlifting is an extremely niche sport and moreover in Navi Mumbai, it doesn't hold much ground. In spite of all this, the girls have excelled in a game that is quite neglected in the city, is a great achievement. I am proud of them and this achievement is very motivating for other schools as well as students from our school," Gulati said.
The girls are leaving for Kolhapur on November 8 and are coached by Deepak Kharat and Santosh Shinde. "The girls have good lifting skills and also practice the sport religiously. This helps them achieve success in every championship," Shinde said.
