College fest gets global touch

Mithibai to play host to students from 10 international colleges

A city college is set to take on on an international flavour.
Mithibai College's festival, Kshitij has attracted a wide number of entries from students across 10 prestigious colleges, all over the world.
Students from Oxford University, London School of Fashion, New York University (NYU), UC Berkeley, Muscat international school, Delhi public school in Riyadh, IMI Luzern School of hotel management in Switzerland, Indian school of Muscat, Indian school of Darsait, and Ruwi College of science are participating in events like film-making and performing arts like belly dancing. The festival kicks of in November 30 to December 3 and has seen a record participation of close to 170 colleges from all over the country and the world.
This is the first time that a college is seeing international participation on such a large scale. Last year, the college had around five entries from international students, but this year, they invited close to 100 foreign institutes and have confirmed entries from 10 of them. "This year we have the maximum number of entries from foreign students so far. It is double than last year's. Even though the festival is only five years old, it is already has an international reputation," said Professor VK Joeman, vice chairperson of the cultural committee.
Most of the foreign students are attracted to the film making events as the festival ropes in Bollywood biggies to judge the event. ''We always have the best in Bollywood as judges for the events. Foreign students get an opportunity for their work to be scrutinised by famous Bollywood personalities,'' added Joeman.
Another major attraction towards the festival is the students' creativity. "The film making contests are designed uniquely to test the students' creativity and innovation. We do not want the run of the mill traditional films or the so called documentaries,'' said SYBCom student, Siddhikesh Ghosalkar, vice chairperson, Kshitij.
For instance, the new event in the film-making category this year is known as 'collision of extravagance' wherein under a Hindi movie title one has to create a story using just songs. Other events are Flash of a genius-ad film making event, Vantage point- a short film movie-making event where the director has to change the point of a popular movie by taking up a topic and making it parallel to the original script.
