Now, only 12-car trains on central line

By afternoon, CR will convert all 9-car trains into 12-cars; harbour line to wait

That familiar scene of commuters running after a local train will finally cease to exist. From late afternoon of November 23, there will not be any nine-car trains on Central Railway's (CR) main line as all they would have been converted to 12-car by then.
"It will be a historic moment. By Wednesday afternoon, we shall convert the last remaining trains into 12-car and there will not be any 9-car trains left on CR's mainline,'' a proud chief spokesperson Vidyadhar Malegaonkar said.
"Central Railway will change the last remaining 56 nine-car services to 12-car services on Wednesday. With this augmentation, all the 785 main line services run daily on CR will have 12-car,'' he said.
Nine-car trains will, however, continue to run on harbour line.
It may be recalled that CR had run its first 12-car service on September 8, 1986 and it is exactly after 25 years that all its trains have been converted to 12-car ones.
During the last three years, CR has tremendously increased its carrying capacity from 1,410 in 2008-09 to 1,573 at present (around 11.5% increase). The number of coaches in service has increased from 13,998 in 2008-09 to 16,896 at present (around 20% increase).
Central Railway is now running 1,573 daily suburban trains in Mumbai by utilising 117 rakes.
"The 12-car trains have 33 per cent more capacity as compared to 9-car trains. Besides increasing capacity, the trains will get an element of stability on stations and commuters will not have to run to catch trains,'' Malegaonkar said.
