Chinese men get a taste of labor pain with a machine
A hospital in China is
offering services of a child birth simulator to allow men experience
labor pain. Some of the volunteers who joined the “pain experience camp“
in Jinan city said they did it out of solidarity with their pregnant
wives. In one case, a wife was seen dragging a reluctant husband to the
simulation machine so he knows what she has gone through, the local
media reported. Another `pain programme' was organized by a local television in Nanchang city of Jiangxi province.
The reality show attracted 20 male volunteers. The simulator induces 10 levels of pain providing electric shocks on the abdomen of volunteers, which become intense gradually before ending. Hospital technicians administer only as much pain as they expect a volunteer to be capable of coping with. Most volunteers cannot take more than a few minutes of it. A hospital official in Jinan said the purpose was to create awareness and respect for childbearing women.
The idea originated from two hosts of a Dutch TV , who went through two hours of simulated contractions to determine the pain last year. They later described it as torture.
A Chinese participant, who reached the highest level of pain, said, “It was horrible.I have nothing but deep admiration for all mothers after this ordeal.“ His goal was to “understand the great pain“ his wife suffered while giving birth to triplets recently .
Reports from Jinan said wives of some volunteers were seen smiling while they were shedding tears and screaming after a minute of machine simulated abdomen contractions.
