Durgotsav celebrated with zeal

Thanekars, especially the Bengali community left no stone unturned in celebrating Durgotsav. Decor, different bhogs, cultural programmes, social activities were witnessed during the five-day Durgotsav celebrations in the city.
For Bengali community this is the biggest and the much awaited festival. However, it is no more restricted to this community, as people from other communities too have joined the celebration and offer prayers to the Goddess. The festival began from October 1, when Goddess Durga, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswati and her two sons Ganpati and Kartik are welcomed and worshipped at four different pandals in the city.
During these five days of celebration, pujas were performed both in morning and evening session. Kalprambra puja, saptami puja, chandi path, pushpanjali, sindoor daan, sandhi and kumari puja were the main attraction of this festival. The puja concluded on October 5 with the immersion of the goddess.
Apart from this, socio-cultural activities were also held during the five-day celebration.

Temples of Bengal at New Bengal Club
The New Bengal Club, in its tenth year of Durga Puja celebration, welcomed 17-ft high and 26-ft wide idol made by renowned artist Shibu Pal from Kolkata. The pandal is erected at Mullabaug, behind Happy Valley in Thane. The main attraction for this year was the pandal based on the brick temples of Bengal - The Terracotta Temples of Bishnupur, Bengal. Earlier in 2008, the club brought honour to the city by placing its Durga idol (of 2008) in the Prince of Wales museum. Apart from the religious programme it had organised anandomela, dance drama, ballet performance by Indrani Duta and her troupe, singing performance by Javed Ali, Kunal Ganjawala and Subhomita among others.

Bringing the community together is Aamra Prabashi Club
In the ninth year of celebration, the Aamra Prabashi Club at Hiranandani continues with the tradition of eco-friendly celebrations. What is unique here is that the mandap wherein the idol is placed resembles Vishnupur style temple. Like every year, the idol is made of environmental friendly substance, that is, Gangamati including the saree and ornaments. One main attraction of this puja is the food stalls that serve all kinds of delicious snacks and food including Bengali Misti. Nine years ago, Durga puja celebration was initiated on a small scale here by a group of around eight Bengalis who called themselves Aamra Prabashi which meant one who has migrated from homeland to a new city. However, over a period of time, the celebration has started taking place on a large scale.
Oldest Durga Puja at Bangiya Parishad
The oldest Durga Puja pandal in the city Bangiya Parishad celebrated the festival with full zeal. This pandal, being one of the oldest one, started celebrating the puja since 1963, this is the 49th year of the organisation to celebrate the festival. Like every year, this year too a traditional idol was placed at Gaondevi Maidan. The pandal had the theme of Kedarnath temple of Lord Shiva. Different days like saptami, ashtami, maha navmi were celebrated in a traditional way and ladies followed the tradition of sindur utsav wherein married women follow the tradition of applying sindur to one another.
Cultural programmes and traditional celebration at Navodaya Sangh
The Navodaya Sangh celebrated the 16th year of Durga puja in a traditional rural Bengali fervour. The theme of the pandal was rural and dedicated to renowned poet from Bengal Kazi Nazrul Islam with a view to take his literature and poems to the younger generation. Last year being the 150th birth anniversary of legendry litterateur Rabindranath Tagore, the pandal had his literature as a theme. The specialty about the Durga idol is that it is installed in a lotus flower and has a very peaceful and serene image. Unlike the other idols that have anger and destructive emotions of Goddess Durga while killing the demon Mahishasur, this idol had a post-war image of Goddess Durga that displays peace. There were musical performances by Jaspinder Narula, Saurav Mani Mandal and from rock bands like Kross Windz from Kolkata.
