There are over 20 days left before you can officially bid goodbye to winter, but summer may catch up with you sooner than you can imagine.
The city registered a maximum temperature of 35°C at Santa Cruz (considered to be representational of the entire city) in the last two days, which is 4°C more than what a 'normal' day in February sees.
On Friday, the Santa Cruz weather station recorded maximum and minimum temperatures of 35.2°C and 17.6°C, respectively. Colaba recorded marginal differences from those at Santa Cruz: 32.2°C and 21.2°C.
The sudden increase in daytime temperature comes on the heels of a chill experienced by residents on January 29 and January 30, when the maximum temperature dropped by 5°C and 3°C, respectively, than the normal. This drop in temperature was attributed to cold waves from the north hitting the city. January 29 also saw the coolest morning in the last decade, when the mercury dipped to a minimum of 10.4°C.
According to Bishwombhar Singh, director, meteorological department (Colaba), there are three factors responsible for giving a summer-like feel in the daytime. One of them is the flow of the easterly winds, which don't carry moisture, to the city. "The wind flowing from the land has been dry and hot. Secondly, a dip in relative humidity has led to soaring temperatures. Besides, since the sky is clear, the heat feels more intense," explained Singh.
The minimum temperature recorded in the last two days, though, has been as expected. "For every month, different mercury levels are considered as normal. For February, 19°C is considered as minimum normal temperature. Both weather stations have reported about-normal temperatures," Singh said.
Saturday, too, will be just as hot: with a maximum temperature of 34°C. So, if you're stepping out in the daytime, make sure you're well-prepared.
