International Baccalaureate®

Learning in the International Baccalaureate® way….
In conversation with Diane Lewthwaite, Principal, École Mondiale World School, Mumbai

Please tell us about International Baccalaureate education in École Mondiale World School?

École Mondiale World School is a pioneer of bringing International Baccalaureate programmes to India and have a legacy of over fourteen years of teaching all three IB programmes. We are among the select few schools who are in this IB continuum category from Nursery to K12 and are accredited by Council of International Schools (CIS). This gives the school an opportunity to partnership in the holistic development of the child to enable them to be independent, culturally aware, engaged citizens. As a CIS accredited school, parents can also be assured that high standards exist across both the learning and the physical infrastructure of the school.

Can you give some insights on the IB curricula & class room culture at École Mondiale?

It is a good question since education today is evolving at a lightning pace. True learning in an IB context is an inquiry process, that is the child becomes the inquirer and the role of the teacher is more of a facilitator for the child. Information is freely available on the internet, Google and various other platforms, thus teaching students how to evaluate the information presented is a key skill that all need to develop in today’s world. The IB programmes also explicitly teaches values that need to be developed for the sake of not just ourselves as individuals but also to help solve the problems facing our world today.

Could you tell us about some outstanding activities in your school?

Creative Activity Service (CAS) is an integral subject of IB education. Our students have CAS ingrained in their understanding both theoretical and practically. École Mondiale provides many opportunities to give vent to creativity through music, theatre, arts or film making. We take leadership roles by collaborating with NGOs developing community service activities. The students organise these activities, rather than just partake in activities organised for them: thus our students are developing leadership skills even at a very young age. École Mondiale has state-of-the-art sports facilities where the high energies of our children gets actively engaged while they learn team spirit and positive value systems.

What are the opportunities for IBDP graduates from École Mondiale World School?

We are extremely proud of our graduates and our large network of 760 + alumni connected across the globe. The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is recognized and respected by the world’s leading universities, and evidence suggests that higher rates of DP students go on to university and higher education study than non-IB students. Once they start at university IBDP students are known for achieving greater success due to their training to be inquirers and thinkers. Consistently excellent results of our IBDP students that are above world average have led to placements in the best universities in India & internationally such as, Stanford, UPenn, Johns Hopkins, Cambridge, Warwick, Kings, University of Toronto, University of Melbourne, National University of Singapore to name a few.
