Cambridge curriculum

EDUCATION THAT SETS YOU UP FOR LIFE
What significance do far-off places like Scotland, Japan, Argentina, Canada and Taiwan hold for a school tucked away in a side street in Central Mumbai? They aren’t just places in the geography textbook; they are places that have jumped out of the books into the lives of its students! The students and teachers of The Universal School, Tardeo, have either visited or engaged in global projects with one or the other of these countries. These days the label ‘international’ is tagged with any and every school but very few schools in India know, understand or truly practice international mindedness. The Universal School, offering the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum, has made global strides, boasting of many firsts: the first all Apple school in India, it was the only Indian school to compose a song for Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday! Just a few months back, it was the only school in India at the first Lego competition held in Japan where the junior participant pair walked away with a prize for the best cooperative poster! The school has had on-going classroom connects with Scotland and now Taiwan. The exchange hasn’t stopped at academics but includes sports as well. Last May, a student was selected for a training camp in Argentina learning from the world’s great footballers! Awards and accolades keep flowing into the school for its innovations, the latest being the Eldrok K-12 Award for ‘Excellence in International Presence’.

The school’s academic rigour comes from a well-structured curriculum delivered by well-trained teachers. Every year, its teachers undergo faceto-face or online training conducted by CAIE so that they may be at the top of their game with regard to the teaching-learning process.

The discovery approach that forms the basis of the Cambridge curriculum, is pursued at every stage. The pre-schoolers gain basic concepts through thematic learning. The UK based Jolly Phonics programme gives them an ease and fluency with both spoken and written English. While field trips take them out to the real world, iPad apps in every subject area, enhance learning through the virtual space.

Whether it is the learning of French or ICT, the experiential aspect is always highlighted from Grades 1 to 10. The school provides the primary and secondary checkpoint examinations at Grades 5 and 9 respectively. The results of the Checkpoint examination as well as the consistent high grades at the IGCSE level, show evidence of the school’s teaching prowess. After-hours coaching and exam-oriented notes are available on the student intrasite to help students revise and gain mastery over concepts. Target setting before every exam, drives the students towards self-improvement and success. The resource room, replete with a counsellor and a special educator, serves its best to the SEN students. This year the school has chosen STEAM as the overarching theme for project work. The parent body appreciated the depth of the students’ knowledge and skills at the just-concluded STEAM display. Visitors were amazed to see the grade-wise story books, based on scientific principles, authored and illustrated by students from Grades 1 to 10.

One needn’t wonder why its students are confident little people who can compete with the best in the world. The school’s emphasis on public speaking and research work enhanced with techno-aided education, makes a significant contribution to developing talented and wholesome personalities. Whether it is daily assemblies, talent competitions or annual days, every child is nudged forward into the limelight. Training in athletics and sports like football, basketball or lawn tennis at the oxygen-rich Priyadarshini Park, add its own sparkle. Education partners like Shiamak Dance Education, Raell Padamsee’s ACE, RoboFun, Furtados School of Music, Banoo Jasubhoy’s FitKid programme, are veritably the cherry on the cake!

The school also nurtures its young citizens in social consciousness through various forms of giving back to society. Not only does the school organize donation drives for organizations such as IDF and Habitat for Humanity, it has also joined hands with Behtar India for recycling thousands of kilos of paper. Last summer the school took to the streets to sensitize the general public about child safety and cyber-crime.

The lime-green and ocean-blue school walls, as well as the staircase, function as a learning tool, offering motivational quotes at every step. No marks for guessing why students and teachers luxuriate in the cosy confines of The Universal School, their home away from home!
