Archers fire blanks

India’s Rahul Banerjee bowed out of the individual archery competition on Tuesday. Banerjee, who had earlier in the day qualified for the round of 16, failed to repeat his performance. The Indian archer went down 3-7 to Poland’s Rafal Dobrowolski. Tarundeep Rai went down 2-6 to South Korea’s Bubmin Kim in the round of 32. Earlier, Jayanta Talukdar and Chekrovolu Swuro lost to their respective American opponents in contrasting fashion to exit in the first round of the individual event. Talukdar got a 0-6 hammering from America’s Jacob Wukie in the opening men’s individual elimination round while Swuro was sent packing after being pipped in the shoot-off by Jennifer Nichols. In the women’s eliminator, the score was 5-5 going into the shoot-off.

Rs50 lakh cash reward to Gagan

Andhra Pradesh government on Tuesday announced a Rs50 lakh cash incentive to Gagan Narang, who won a bronze medal in the 10m air rifle.
The Andhra government had so far given cash incentives to the tune of Rs191.50 lakh to Narang for winning medals in various international sporting events like Asian Games (2010), Commonwealth Games (2010) etc, a release from the chief minister’s office said.

Lifter Ravi Kumar disappoints

India’s weightlifting campaign ended on a dismal note on Tuesday with Katulu Ravi Kumar coming up with a below-par performance in the men’s 69kg category at the ExCel Arena. Ravi Kumar lifted a below par 303kg — 136kg in snatch and 167kg in clean and jerk — to finish sixth in the 10-lifter Group B competition. The Group A competition among 14 top weightlifters of this category was to be held later in the day.

Swarn fails to make it to semis

Rower Swarn Singh bowed out of medal contention in the men’s singles sculls after finishing fourth in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. Swarn finished fourth in the quarters with a timing of 7:11.59s to crash out of medal contention. He will now compete in the C/D semifinals for the 13th to 24th place. Lightweight doubles sculls pairing of Sandeep Kumar and Manjeet Singh finished sixth in second repechage and will fight for lower placings.

Judoka Garima knocked out

Indian judoka Garima Chaudhary’s Olympic
debut lasted merely 81 seconds as she was knocked out by Japanese Yoshie
Ueno in the first elimination round of the 63kg category
on Tuesday. The referee stopped the contest in the 81st second as Ueno was awarded an Ippon which according to judo rules means maximum points awarded for pinning an opposition with her back touching the mat for 25 seconds. After Ueno pinned Garima down, the Japanese judoka was straightaway awarded 100 points.
