This year, go green with your decorations too

This year, go green with your decorations too

In the last few years many concerned residents have come forward to replace the thermacol decorations with eco-friendly options. The main question though is not many are aware where to buy these decorations from. Few organisations in Thane and Kalyan have come forward to start selling only eco-friendly decorations in their shop.
A customer looks at eco-friendly makhars at a Mulund shop. (inset) The makhars, made of cloth, jute, paper, etc., are available in a variety of designs. The Gangaur Arts in Mulund is one of them. Started by Indramohan Virmani’s a managing director of a well known company, the joint is located near the railway station in Mulund (East).
“Earlier we used to make thermacol decorations, however five years ago I saw the damage done to the surrounding by thermacol and decided to shift to environment-friendly means. Owing to my work I have to travel to various states in the country. On one such journey to Guwahati I saw people making decorations using cane carpets (chatai) and thus was born the idea of an eco-friendly makhar,” he told HT Live.
Gangaur Arts, which is also recommended on the Maharashtra government’s environment department’s website, sells decorations made from cardboard, sunboard, cloth, jute, cane, paper and thread. The designs include replicas of famous temples, royal carriage (doli), swing, royal chair and boat.
The colours used are also water colours. The outlet also sells shadu clay idols, organic haldi-kumkum and eco-friendly puja thali.
Rohit Akkewar of Siddhivinayak Kala Kendra in Kalyan (W) have eco-friendly idols made from cardboard. “We have used only coloured cardboards and nothing else in the decorations. We sell the decorations for small household Ganesha’s with an idol upto the height of 1.5 feet. They are in the price range of Rs425 to Rs1100,” he said.
The Desale’s of Herambh Art in Thane is a well known name for eco-friendly decorations in Thane. They even export their decoration in other countries.
“This year we have decorations made from bamboo and paper foils. There are designs of temple, palace, swing and royal chair among others. The range is from Rs225 to Rs6000. We have decorations for both household and bigger mandals,” said Kailas Desale, the owner.
