This group show by abstract artists is a bold expression in vivid colours
When & where:
Till September 20, Tao Art Gallery, Worli
Samata Joshi

Currently on display, Abstract Horizon, is an exhibition of abstract paintings with a strong amalgamation of colours. Kalpana Shah, a self-taught artist and owner of Tao gallery, is herself a participant. “This is a very bold expression of the artists’ mind, because after all, abstraction is all about being open. Everybody has put together a very strong show,” she says. Participants at the exhibition include well-known artists like Anwar, Brinda Miller, Kavita Jaiswal, Ravi Mandlik, Ingrid Pitzer and many others. The work displayed here is larger in size in comparison to the previous shows the gallery has hosted, where the paintings were just about 10-12 inches in size. “These paintings are large, about 10 feet tall,” adds Kalpana. Every artist has showcased their own style of abstract thinking which depends largely on the play of colours.

Kavita Jaiswal, who has been painting abstract art for nearly two decades now, says that abstraction is a sensitive form of art. “Abstraction does not portray the outer being, the skin. It goes way beyond that. I suppose that when artists are rendering in abstraction, they go deep within themselves and then try to bring out the essence in their work,” says Kavita. Her works No Beginning, No End, portrays that all of us live in the present moment where there is no birth or death but only a continuation of life. “This is what I celebrate through my work and what I believe in,” she says. For the artist, it’s all about bringing out the essence of the form than the form itself. “My work here is the reflection of the inner being as well as the inner being of the earth. Positive energy exists within us and the more we water that energy, it grows and that’s what my art is all about,” she adds.

Commenting on the exhibit, Kalpana says, “There are not many such artists and it’s not so easy to create abstract art.”
