PUNISHMENT:
Banned for life from playing any match held or authorised by ICC, BCCI or any of its affiliated units. “The BCCI has done a good thing, it will send the right signal to other players.”
Dilip Vengsarkar, ex-India skipper MUMBAI: With 40 wickets in seven Ranji Trophy matches during 2011-12 season, T Sudhindra not only managed to become the leading wicket-taker in the premier domestic championship but also almost saw his side through in the quarterfinals against domestic giants, Mumbai.
Though, Madhya Pradesh lost the match, the performance had brought Sudhindra into contention for India ‘A’ tour to the West Indies.
All dreams lay shattered on Saturday when the BCCI disciplinary committee, headed by president N Srinivasan, imposed a life ban on the MP pacer.
Sudhindra, who averaged 18.70 in last Ranji season, was found guilty for accepting an offer to spot-fix in a local cricket match in Indore.
He will lose the monthly gratis, benevolent fund, benefit match or any other funding provided by the BCCI. Besides, he was also debarred from holding any position in any cricket association affiliated to the BCCI.
“I will take necessary steps on getting proper legal advice,” the pacer responded through an SMS when queried about his next move.
“It’s a double blow for Madhya Pradesh cricket especially with Mohnish Mishra also being banned from cricket for one year,” said Mukesh Sahni, the state Ranji coach.
“Sudhindra played a crucial role in state Ranji team’s success last season. Mishra also contributed handsomely with the bat but now as the verdict is out, the state cricket is bound to suffer,” he added.
Sahni however supported BCCI’s decision saying anyone whose misconduct brings disrepute to the game should be punished.
DK Mishra, Mohnish’s father, said he respects the decision taken by the BCCI panel but feels his son should not be banned from playing domestic cricket.
“We respect the decision taken by the board but Mohnish should be allowed to feature in domestic cricket,” he added.
Abhinav Bali, who plays for Himachal Pradesh was also caught in the sting operation and handed one-year ban, however admitted before the media while leaving BCCI premises that he has committed a mistake and has been punished for the same.
