Infocus M808 and Micromax Canvas Nitro 4G

Infocus M808

American smartphone brand InFocus is trying to gain a foothold across different price brackets in the Indian smartphone market. After the budget M370, they have launched a mid-range offering called the M808. At this price, the M808 competes with the likes of Xiaomi's Mi 4i and the popular Moto G.The first thing that sets the InFocus M808 apart from the others in this price range is the apart from the others in this price range is the all-metal unibody design. Plus, the phone is just 7mm slim and surprisingly lightweight for a phone with all-metal construction. Thanks to the texture, it did not feel slippery in the hands but we did not much like the key placement. Contrary to conventional designs, both the power and volume keys of the M808 are on the left instead of the right.
One impressive feature of the phone is the display. The M808 has a 5.2-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels -it's one of the few phones to offer a full HD display at this price. The screen is beautiful with sharp details, rich colours and excellent viewing angles. There is even a bluelight filter setting and an option to adjust the colour temperature. InFocus has also added a dynamic screen mode option in display settings that boosts contrast -great for watching videos and playing games.
Specifications include a Mediatek octa core MT6753 processor with support for 4G bands in India. You also get 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. About 10.5GB is available to you at the start. Thankfully, you can expand the memory using a microSD card and it has USB OTG support too (to connect a USB flash drive with an adapter).
Performance from the phone s excellent. We did not see any slowdown or lag with day-today use, with full HD videos or while playing demanding games. The issue is that the device tends to heat up quickly.Within 5 minutes of gaming, the phone started to heat up. Battery life was one day with regular usage.
The InFocus user interface is clean and simple to use. There is no app drawer so all icons are on multiple home screens. There is a preloaded mobile assistant app which offers help with clearing the internal storage, managing the power saving settings, app permission manager, device accelerator, backup, app data control as well as battery usage.
The 13MP rear camera offers mixed results. While outdoor photos have good details and natural colour, indoor and low light images have a fair bit of noise and lack details. The front camera suffers from washed out colours and also has visible noise. We hope InFocus fixes some issues with a software update.
At this price, the InFocus M808 scores high on looks, build quality, features and performance. However, the lacklustre camera performance is the main issue, especially considering that both its competitors, the Moto G (3rd gen) and Xiaomi Mi 4i offer good camera performance and better battery life.

Micromax Canvas Nitro 4G

Micromax's Canvas Nitro 4G is the third phone in the Nitro series. However, it is a departure from the typical usual design and user interface we have seen on the previous two phones in the Nitro series. One of the good things about this phone is that it supports 4G on both SIM slots. Design-wise, the phone is stylish with two chrome rings for a frame and a sandstone type finish on the rear panel. The machine drilled speakers at the bottom of the phone add to the overall looks. Build quality is top-notch and the phone feels great to hold.Power and volume keys are ergonomically placed on the right side and are easy to use with one hand.
The Nitro 4G is the first smartphone to come with the new octa core Snapdragon 415 processor from Qualcomm. The 415 strikes a good balance between performance and power consumption along with 4G support for Indian bands. In our usage we had no issues running day-to-day tasks as well as playing games such as Angry birds 2 on the phone. What was really impressive was that even after almost 20 minutes of continuous gaming, the phone did not heat up. Moreover, the 2GB RAM keeps multi-tasking seamless. Battery life was a slight letdown as with constant data connectivity and mix usage, the phone struggled to last one full day.
Unlike some phones, Micromax has opted with a close to stock user interface on the Nitro 4G. You get plain Android Lollipop experience which we feel is another reason for the zippy performance of the phone.
Micromax has provided a 13MP rear camera with dual LED flash and a 5MP front camera. The rear camera is impressive takes well detailed photos in daylight as well as indoors with minimal noise.
Even close-up macro shots are su perb. Moreover, its focussing speed and shutter speed are also zippy .
Front camera also takes good self ies, but lacked details. The phone also does full HD video recording from the rear camera and while in day time the quality is good, low light videos were not up to the mark. Audio output from the exter nal as well internal speaker is loud and clear. Note that while it has speaker grills on both sides of the microUSB port at the bottom , only one side has the actual speaker.
Canvas Nitro 4G from Micromax is aimed at the mid-range user who wants a stylish yet powerful de vice. While the phone impresses with its modern design, sturdy build quality and good day to day per formance, the average battery life is a disappoint ment.
For the same price you can get the Yu Yureka Plus or Lenovo K3 note -both offer a full HD display, bet ter battery life and more powerful hardware However, if you prefer a 5-inch display we recom mend checking out the Huawei Honor 4c. This `8,999 phone has similar hardware specifications but offers better battery life.
