Asus A555LF

Part of the new A series laptops, the A555 from Asus is well built and has a tapered design. It has a superglossy top lid which is a fingerprint magnet. Instead of a single color, Asus has chosen a subtle pattern design that lends an element of style.Inside, the palmrest has a brushed metal finish while the area around the keyboard is textured. The full size keyboard is comfortable to use but we felt that at this price, Asus should have offered a backlight.

The 15.6-inch display has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels -good for most users. We felt that the screen has good viewing angles although brightness levels could have been better.

On the left side of the notebook is the Ethernet port, VGA, HDMI and dual USB 3.0 ports while the right side has the optical drive, USB 2.0 and a SD card slot. You get an Intel Core i5 (5200U) processor, 8GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 930M Graphics and a 1TB hard drive.

The laptop comes preloaded with Windows 10 but we really wish there wasn't so much bloatware. Performance is good as expected. Even though it is not a gaming laptop, the hardware was good enough to run games such like Call of Duty: Ghosts on medium to high settings. The laptop did not heat up much even after 20 minutes of 3D gaming.

Volume output of the laptop is excellent -loud enough to use as a music player in a small room. We did face an issue with the front camera -it refused to work with the Windows 10 camera app, although with Skype it had no issues. The image quality is noisy as expected but for occasional video calls it works well. Battery life is the sore point of the laptop. Even with just document use and medium brightness, we got only three and a half hours of battery life. With heavy usage it dropped to two and a half hours.

Overall, if you are looking at a multi-purpose powerful laptop, the Asus A555 is a good option.Otherwise you can consider the Dell Inspiron 5000 that offers similar specifications, a stylish design and better battery life.
