When buying a DSLR, pick up a good camera body from a brand that boasts a good range of accessories, as well as a good network of service centres. Later, as your proficiency in photography increases, you can pick up additional lenses that meet your purpose.
For a camera that will help you learn the basics, consider the Nikon D3200 ( 30,650). This 24MP shooter is equipped with a Guide mode that helps first-time users click good pictures just by following the steps displayed on the screen. This camera is capable of Full HD videos and comes with the standard 18-55mm lens.
The 16MP Nikon D5100 ( 28,500) is a generation older than the D3200. And while it does not have a Guide mode, you get a snapper that promises better low-light performance, more manual controls, a flip-out display, and at a lesser cost.
At around the same price, you can also pick up the Canon EOS 1100D ( 28,600). This 12MP camera is capable of just 720p videos, but you get two lenses in the box: a basic 18-55mm lens, as well as the telephoto 55-250mm zoom lens. The 1100D is also available with just the 18-55mm lens for 23,500.
It should be noted that megapixels are not all that important when choosing a DSLR, and any camera with 10MP and above is more than capable of shooting great pictures.
