Denmark’s Nicklas Bendtner could face sanctions for his celebration
Denmark
striker Nicklas Bendtner could face sanction by UEFA after revealing
the logo of a betting company while celebrating his second goal against
Portugal on Wed-nesday evening.
Pictures show Bendtner lifting his shirt to show the name of an Irish firm on the waistband of his underpants. Sponsors pay millions to be associated with the European Championship and UEFA has strict rules preventing ambush marketing. A spokesperson said UEFA was investigating the matter. Bendtner scored twice in Denmark’s 3-2 defeat by Portugal, prompting a spokesman for the betting company to release a statement claiming credit for Bendtner’s good luck. The spokesman also said no Denamoney had changed hands and that the underpants have been sent to several players.
Blast from Past
1996 Atlanta Olympics: Sprinter Linford Christie wears contact lenses
embossed with the Puma logo at the press conference preceding the 100
metres final, despite Reebok being the official sponsor.
1996 ICC World Cup: Pepsi runs a series of advertisements titled “nothing official about it” targeting official sponsor Coca-Cola. 2000 Sydney Olympics: Qantas Airlines’s slogan ‘The Spirit of Australia’ sounds strikingly similar to the Games slogan ‘Share the Spirit’, despite Ansett Air being the official sponsor. 2006 FIFA World Cup: Dutch fans were made to remove Bavaria Brewery’s leeuwenhosen because Budweiser was the official beer sponsor 2010 FIFA World Cup: South African budget airline Kulula pulled back its ambush ad after a FIFA complaint that it infringed its trademark. Kulula.com’s ad described the firm as the ‘Unofficial National Carrier of the You-Know-What’.
Also,
two Dutchwomen were arrested for ambush advertising and 36 women ejected
from the stadium when they were spotted wearing short orange dresses
made by Bavaria. As in 2006, Budweiser was the official beer of the
event.
