The transport undertaking plans to make travelling hassle-free for commuters by installing pass validators on buses. Initially, the BEST's air-conditioned fleet of 282 buses will get the automated gadgets.
While confirming that the pilot project has been launched, BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta said the validators will be introduced in other buses (non-AC) in the 4,288strong fleet.
In the future, the undertaking is considering plying “conductor-less“ buses where machines will dispense tickets and validate cashless cards during a journey , said a source.“The role of a conductor will be taken over by the machine in future,“ said an official, requesting anonymity.
During Tuesday's budget discussions, the BEST announced that it would scrap 121 old buses by March 2015. It also plans to add 299 buses in the next financial year (2015-16) and also phase out 180 buses.
The budget copy mentioned: “As many as 1,555 buses of the undertaking are equipped with passenger information system. Under this, the passenger gets the actual information about the buses running on specific routes through text messages on cellphones. The system will be implemented on the entire fleet of the undertaking in 2015-16.“
The issue of breakdowns was also discussed in the meeting. “The cases of engine failures are on the rise and the cost of overhauling them was expensive (around Rs 1.40 lakh per engine).
